How WW2 Tactics have Influenced the Conflict in Ukraine - Kamikaze Drone?

Background

WWII or World War 2 was known as the a global war that fought by superpowers across the region. The war had been considered as one of the most deadly war in human-kind. In Europe, the use of conventional weapons that killed thousand of people and the atomic bombs that were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the very end of WW2. World War 2 is also categorized as the modern war during that period. Because it was related the use of aircrafts, battleships, submarines, bombers and missiles.

Presently, these new technologies and traditional warfare had been chosen as weapon of choice to upperhand in the battlefield. Some countries invented new military hardwares while some operated the existing weapon but used it in a different approach. In 1944, Japanese military introduced a suicide bombing tactics so-called "kamikaze" to destroy enemy warships. The Japanese pilots were instructed to dive down into the enemy ships with the loaded explosion mounted on the aircraft, then it explodes on impact. This attack strategy was simply to struck or disable hostile warships then the troops can advance forward in the territory. In the recent conflict, Russia has been operating kamikaze strategy on its targets which was the WW2 tactics that the Japanese used on American warships in the Pacific (Knight, 2022).

What is the Kamikaze attacks in Ukraine-Russia conflict?

The Iranian-made drone Shahed-136 or suicide drone was originally manufactured by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. It is argued that the purpose of the pilotless drone is to strike on American Carrier Strike Group. I believe that in Iran-US in the Persian gulf, Iran will likely to deploy amount of drone to strike on the US aircraft carrier which makes it impossible for the US to intercept several targets at once.

The Carrier Strike Group or sometimes refer to Carrier Battle Group. consists of several warship variants and each variant has different combat roles. The submarine, for example, can be stealth and lure under the water surface to strike enemy positions. Moreover, destroyers class Aircraft carrier is the most protected and valued asset in the US military. The pilotless drone hardware production aims to strike on the US aircraft carriers. The attack scenario is used by launching hundreds of suicide drone to target the aircraft carriers. With the numerous amount of drone strikes, it is impossible for the aircraft carrier to defend against the suicide drone. The same tactics that the Japanese used in WW2. In addition to the drone attacks, the drones are remoted by GPS guradiance to hit the targets.

In the early state of Pearl Harbor invasions, the Japanese imperial army, conducted military operation that surprised United States Navy fleet in the pacific. The Japanese aircraft flew in flight formation to form the attacks on the US Navy vessels. The US also responded with air to air engage as well as ground to air assaults. More importantly, the Japanese had so-called the Kamikaze attack. The kamikaze attacks was originated in Japan. The pilots were trained and practiced in a simulate attack against US warships in the pacific (Kamikaze, 2023).

Sucide Drones in Ukraine-Russia Conflict?

In the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Iranian-supplied can be seen loitering at low attitude and awaiting to hit the targets. The drones is ought to strike in order to weaken on Ukrainian air defense and to create chaos across the city (Squire, 2023).

According to BBC News, there were injuries and deaths among the drone massive wave of drone attacks. Air sirens were alerted across the city to signal the population to seek for shelters and avoid going out. The attack wave lasted for 4 hours which involved a total of 60 drones. The Ukraine counterpart also added that roughly 36 drones had been intercepted by the Ukraine's Armed Force (Lukiv, 2023).

Arguably, the use of kamikaze drones strategy is somehow effective in the role of modern war. Since, the drone productions are cheap to produce and it is not complex to produce because it does not require advanced technology. On the other hand, from Ukraine's perspective, the drones were impressing them at first. However, the drones are flying at low attitude before designate to the targets so it is visible to human eyes which make it easier to shoot down by the Ukraine's army with just rifles and other weaponry (Butenko et al., 2022).

In short, during WW2 the kamikaze attacks which were trained by the pilots is now being replaced by the drone technologies for two reasons. Firstly, in a war scenario, soldiers are less likely to be deployed in warzone therefore the drones will be replaced to save lives. Lastly, the drones are powerful enough to bring disturbance in major cities - especially among the innocents people and businesses.
